Understanding Different Yoga Traditions
Yoga isn't monolithic. Dozens of styles exist, each with its own philosophy, pace, and purpose. Understanding the differences helps you choose a practice that matches your goals and temperament.
Hatha Yoga
Pace: Slow and deliberate. Focus: Alignment and breath. Class duration: 60–90 minutes.
Hatha is the traditional foundation of physical yoga. Poses are held longer (30–60 seconds), giving you time to understand alignment. Breath is synchronised with movement. This style is ideal for beginners and anyone wanting to understand the mechanics of poses.
Vinyasa Flow
Pace: Dynamic, faster. Focus: Breath-linked movement. Class duration: 60–75 minutes.
Vinyasa links breath to movement in continuous sequences. You transition between poses on the breath, creating a flowing rhythm. This style builds cardiovascular endurance and heat in the body. It's best for practitioners with some yoga experience.
Yin Yoga
Pace: Very slow. Focus: Deep tissue and connective tissue. Hold times: 3–5 minutes per pose.
Yin is passive; you relax into poses, often supported by props. Long holds allow deepening into tissues without muscular engagement. It's calming, meditative, and excellent for flexibility and injury recovery.
Ashtanga Yoga
Pace: Fixed sequences, rhythmic. Focus: Discipline and consistency. Class duration: 90 minutes.
Ashtanga follows five set sequences performed in the same order every time. This repetition builds depth; you progress in the sequence as your practice matures. It's challenging and requires commitment.
Restorative Yoga
Pace: Very slow. Focus: Healing and relaxation. Props: Essential (bolsters, blankets, blocks).
Restorative yoga fully supports your body in gentle poses held 5–15 minutes. It calms the nervous system, making it ideal for stress relief and recovery from injury or fatigue.
Choosing Your Style
Start with Hatha to learn fundamentals. Once comfortable, explore Vinyasa for more dynamic practice. Yin and Restorative pair beautifully with any practice for balance and recovery. Experiment; your preference may evolve over time.
